On my website I sell three popular and wonderful brands of baby wraps. There are many wraps out there, but I am pretty small time, being my only (and best) employee, and these three offer a tremendous variety of length, color, and fabric.
EllaRoo, Wrapsody, and Storchenwiege wraps are all great carriers and any one is a fine choice. They all work very well for newborns through toddlers, and the heavier ones are great for your tired preschooler, too.
As these are all wonderful and reliable wraps, your best bet for deciding may be in shopping for the one you like the appearance of best. You may enjoy shopping for wraps by color to find the one that is just right for your tastes.
Other considerations:
- You might choose a Bali Baby Breeze or EllaRoo if you are particularly concerned about the heat.
- You might choose an EllaRoo for a sturdier option in warm weather.
- You might choose a Storchenwiege or EllaRoo for more sizing options, including rebozo (short wrap) length for one-shoulder carries.
- You might choose a Storchenwiege for more support and a more forgiving fabric
- You might choose a Bali Baby Breeze for a wrap that folds down small and can fit in a diaper bag.
- You might choose a Storchenwiege for an organic wrap option.
A short description of each brand:
Wrapsody Bali Baby Breeze wraps are notably different from the other brands in that they are thin gauze. They are both thinner and cooler than other wraps available, and the best choice for Summer. The thinness means that you must wrap precisely, making sure that the Wrapsody wrap is tightened evenly so that you do not get pressure points. This precision can be learned by anyone with a couple weeks practice.
Not the best choice for a heavy child, but it will do wonderfully for newborn through toddler, and older if using for shorter periods of time. Hand batiked in Indonesia under fair trade practices, each one is unique. The colors and patterns are different from the usual striped woven wrap. It is recommended that these wraps be hand washed and air dried.
EllaRoos are much thinner than Storchenwiege wraps, but not as thin as the gauze Bali Baby Breeze wraps. They are sometimes preferred by people living in hotter climes, or specifically for use in the Summer, for people who want the happy medium between the thinnest wraps and the sturdiest wraps. Whereas the gauze wraps do best in multi-layered carries, an EllaRoo works great even in cool single-layer carries like the Rucksack. Some people who are used to wrapping with a thicker wrap, find it more difficult to get a comfortable carry with an EllaRoo, but in my experience those who begin with an EllaRoo are able to use it comfortably for the duration, possibly because of having learned to wrap more precisely from the beginning.
A thin wrap like the EllaRoo can also be easier to learn with, and less intimidating. EllaRoo is the only brand I carry which is handwoven. They are made in Guatemala under Fair Trade practices. My EllaRoo inventory varies by color and size so check the store for availability. They can be machine washed on cold, and should be air dried. EllaRoo wraps are fringed.
Storchenwiege wraps have been around for decades and have one of the very best reputations on the market. They also come in many beautiful colors, as well as a few organic options. They are known as the most indestructible of wraps–the one you would want to have with you on a desert island! The manufacturer recommends machine washing and line drying, but many satisfied customers have machine dried as well.
Storchenwiege wraps are very strong–making the perfect hammock or swing–and will last for generations. They are great for the one wrap that will last from newborn through big kid wearing. They come in a wide variety of sizes–shorter wraps are perfect for Summer, or longer wraps for the comfy-cushy multi-layered carries.
