Warm Weather Wrapping in a Gauze Wrap

26th May, 2010 / Baby Wrap Tips / 9 Comments

The biggest complaint I’d hear about wrapping was getting too hot in Summer.  So I got a gauze wrap and started using it almost exclusively.  I found that it really did make a difference!  The lightweight gauze is so thin, the airflow is much improved and my baby and I both stay cooler.

Now I’m selling Bali Baby Breeze–the most beloved gauze wraps on the market.  So here are some tips on enjoying your BBB wraps this Summer:

  • Use gauze wraps with multi-layer carries–the thin fabric will leave you feeling much cooler even in layers, and the thin fabric can be uncomfortable in single-layer carries.  I stayed comfortable hiking in 90 degree weather with my BBB wrap in a Double Hammock Carry last weekend.
  • Wrap carefully to avoid uncomfortable pressure points–the thin wrap can dig in if not spread and tightened well, but it makes a dream of a wrap job when you take the time to tighten all across the width of the wrap evenly.  A thin wrap can provide a very close, comfy wrap job that doesn’t budge as you and your baby wiggle through your day.
  • Lighten your load by leaving your big diaper bag in the car and carry only a few essentials in the pocket sewn into the tail of your Bali Baby Breeze.  No straps or bags will mean a cooler walk for you.  That pocket could also carry your water bottle.
  • Enjoy how small your Bali Baby Breeze wrap folds (or wads) up when not in use.  Stuff it into the built in pocket in the tail or the matching bag it came in and watch it fit easily into your diaperbag.
  • Pretend not to notice the looks of appreciation as you sport your stunning batik wrap out in public, striding confidently past onlookers like a cool, casual movie star!

Can I use this wrap with toddlers? My daughter is almost 2 and weighs about 30lbs.

To quote the manufacturer: “Although the Gypsy Mama has comfortably carried even very large children in this wrap, if you are carrying for more than 30 minutes at a time you will find it most useful until your child reaches about 35 pounds. With children heavier than this, it can still be used to carry for periods greater than 30 minutes but requires more frequent adjusting for optimum comfort.”

In my experience, a two year old will not often want to be carried for extended periods, so the Bali Baby Breeze may be fine for frequent up and downs on a walk. An EllaRoo would be the next coolest wrap option, and will be comfier for longer carries with a toddler.

I still carry both my Irish twins (ages 2 and 1) comfortably in my Bali Baby Breeze – and sometimes both at the same time. The BBB is my most comfortable and verstatile wrap. I reach for it because I know that I can my babies needs in any situation because I can do such a variety of carries with it.

I’m from a warm climate (Australia) and will need to use mostly light wraps to stay comfortable. What are some of the best wrapping styles for these thinner fabrics? I’m new to baby wearing and am not sure which ones are multi-layering and supportive enough. Thanks!!

Hi, Rachel! Because a gauze wrap is quite thin, it actually shines in full length (multi layer) carries. For that reason, Wrapsody only comes in longer sizes (woven wrap size 6, 7, and 8). I would suggest learning Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC) and then try other carries. Double Hammock Carry is a really comfy back carry that would work well for you in a Wrapsody Breeze wrap during hot summers.
